Contact Improvisation is a partner dance form based on the physical principles of touch, momentum, shared weight, and most quintessentially - following a shared point of contact. The form was founded in 1972 by Steve Paxton. Integrating his background as a modern dancer and his studies in the martial art form Aikido, Steve developed Contact Improv through explorations with his students and colleagues at the time. In 1968, the year of the student revolts, the dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch (1940–2009) begins to create her own pieces. When she is appointed as the director of the Wuppertal Ballet in 1973, she renames it “Tanztheater Wuppertal”. Her idea of combining dance and theatre revolutionises dance and makes her an icon of a new form of expressionism. She receives numerous international awards for her work. The company’s repertoire is world famous; to this day her pieces continue to tour all over the world. The Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch has made dance history. In 2023, it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Repertoire begins with the syllable ‘re-’, which stands for repetition and return. Today we know that cultural memory requires both: an archive, where historical material is preserved, and the periodic recreation, or re-enactment, of what is held in the archive. Memories cannot live on without input from the outside world. For the archive and for Pina Bausch’s pieces this means that what is stored here must also be performed, restaged, exhibited, critically examined and confronted with our present-day reality.

Danish Dance Theatre is the national contemporary dance company of Denmark, based at the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen. As of April 1st 2023, Spanish choreographer Marina Mascarell has been the company Artistic Director. ZEN ZEN ZO is a Brisbane-based physical theatre company at the forefront of contemporary performance and training in Australia. Founded by Lynne Bradley & Simon Woods in 1992, the company has continually produced innovative theatre experiences that have challenged and delighted the audiences. Zen Zen Zo has created over 50 new productions ranging from radical reinterpretations of the classics to innovative self-devised works, many of which have been showcased at national and international festivals. Zen Zen Zo’s aesthetic was forged between the ancient Asian dance-theatre traditions, the European avant-garde theatre movement, and contemporary pop culture. People Watching is a collective comprising six multidisciplinary artists currently based in Montreal. Founded in the tumultuous spring of 2020, they were initially moved to investigate ways in which intimacy could be shared with an audience during a time of profound seclusion. The inquisitive nature of this creative process led them to fuse their organic acrobatic research with elements of physical theatre and nuanced choreographic work. By providing the awe-inspiring qualities of contemporary circus with a scaffolding of depth and context, People Watching began to establish a body of work that is intimate and inherently human. Using live performance, film, and photography as a vehicle for their artistic endeavors, they have found local and international recognition, which in turn has fostered collaborations with a multitude of established creatives and companies, such as Jacob Jonas The Company, Diego Vega, Amy J. Gardner, Alice Phoebe Lou, Ines Talbi, Susannah Haight and Jason Lam.
